A Massacre Foretold / Mentiras

These two documentary films shown together tell the story of the 1987 massacre in Acteal (Chiapas) of 45 members of the Abejas (the Bees) by government trained and armed paramilitaries. The Abejas are a peaceful organisation of Mexican peasants, and are supporters of the Zapatistas, whose spokesman is the elusive sub-commander Marcos, but they reject all forms of violence to achieve their aim – the right to make their on decisions on issues that concerned, including the use of their land. Scottish film maker Nick Higgins sounds an alarm about this little reported incident and pays homage to the people of Chiapas.
